October 2008

Not so long ago, as the weather started to warm up, JD started to request riding his bike to school in the morning.

So one day I tried with him.  It all went well, except for the fact that, Miss Chloe also wanted to ride a bike.  It was only after a huge effort of coaxing that she decided to settle for sitting in the pram.  But it didn’t stop there.  Everyday since then, she would climb onto her brother’s bike, trying very hard to move the pedals.

I wasn’t going to get her a proper bike till a year later, when she turns three.  But I brought forward the plan by 1 year.  Because she showed me that she could do it when we walked past a bike shop one afternoon.  She just hopped onto a bike right for her size, started to pedal and even shouted out loud “Look mummy!!!! I do it!”

So, now, she has her own big girl’s bike, riding behind her brother every Friday morning, accopanying him to school!

The good thing with her bike is if she gets tired, I could push the handle bar behind her bike and even help her to steer.

What a lucky girl she is.  I never had such a pretty looking bike :)   And I only owned my first bike when I was 23yrs old, a gift from my husband then!

Well, there really isn’t any cooking involved with this.  For some reasons, my kids have been on this growth spurt, when they are constantly hungry, constantly needing a feed, and I am constantly thinking of quick ways to whip up some food.

On Sat morning, they each had a bowl of oat porridge, 2 slices of toast, half a fresh mango for each of them, a cup of soya Milo, and I am not kidding half hour later they are calling out “I am hungry!”  Arggh!

Today, I decided to prepare lots of fruits kebabs, store them in an airtight container in the fride, so they can help themselves to it throughout the day, on top of their regular breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner…..

But this is a slight variation, I had some of them dipped in melted chocolate.  JD has been attending a fair bit of his friends brithday parties in just the last 4 weeks.  I don’t know about other places, but I find in OZ, it’s very popular for kids to hand out goodies bags at the end of each party and it is usually stuffed with packs of chocolates, candies, lollipops…errrrrrr

I have nothing against chocolate because I love them myself.  But it really was too much for a kid to eat.  Heehee, so I melted all the little Freddos, Cadbury Milk chocolate, added a bit of milk, then dipped the strawberries and bananas into the chocolate.  Store it in the fridge till the chocolate hardens.  So the kids had their fruits but also a little bit of chocolate!

This is what Chloe said everyday!

“I do it”, she said every morning, if I tried to take off her nappy, she needed to take off her own nappy, get a new nappy out, wipe her bottom, before allowing me to put on a new nappy!

“I do it”, she will say reminding me once again she needed to undress herself, tried to pick her own clothes, sometimes totally uncoordinated in colours.

“I do it”, she will put her hand out, reminding me that she can put on her own socks, her own shoes.

“I do it”, she will say again before another attempt to wear her own backpack out of the house every morning.

The “I do it” list goes on and on, with eating, drinking, bringing her dinner from the kitchen to the dinner table, shower, getting in and out of the car….

Most of the time I just let “Her do it”, double the time, but at least 10 less things for me to do, hiak!

Sometimes her “I do it” Chloe’s way can also be frustrating, ah well!

And did I mention that she has now ditched the tricyle, and progress onto the proper bike with training wheels already?  She just wants to grow up quick to catch up with her brother.

We love greens in our household.  All sort of greens.  Broccoli, asparagus, capsisum, choy sum, chinese spinach, english spinach, peas, snow peas…

My kids love prawns too.  When we go for dim sum, my kids will definitely ask for “Har Gow” ( prawn dumpling) on top of their all time favourites such as chee cheong fun (rice flour roll), siu mai (pork and prawn dumpling), pork ribs, char siu pao (steamed roast pork bun).

Last week JD spotted some fresh prawns while we were out doing some groceries shopping.

So we bought some and what did I do with the prawns?

I quickly chopped up some fresh asparagus, green capsicum, garlic and ginger for dinner.

In a wok, I melted some butter in the pan, sauteed the garlic and ginger, then added the prawns into the wok.  Just when I noticed the prawns were turning pink, I quickly added in the asparagus and green capsicums.  The seasoned it with lots of black pepper, some salt to taste.

Tada!  It was a quick and simple meall but oh so yummy!

The 2 weeks of school holidays has started.  I have also taken 2 weeks off work to spend time with my kids, and has also scheduled some “ME” time and time to catch up with friends.

The weather is a mixed bag today, sunny one moment, rainy the next, then windy…

While I was fixing the dinner this evening, the kids have dragged their quilts, pillows, sleeping bags out of their rooms, then pulled the cushions of the sofas …

And when I asked what they were up to, they pretended to snore, shut their eyes so tight, then whispered to me “Shhh, mummy, we are playing sleeping, shhhhh…”

Kids are fun.  And double the fun when the 2 play together.
